Welcome to FanBoyPrime! I am a bit of a DC Comics FanBoy. Let’s get to know one another.
I read comics and have been reading them for quite some time. It started as a zit faced teenager and was a fantastic way to escape. Comic books are a place where even the most hideous of creatures can be noble and do amazing feats. Of course, as a teen with a horrible complexion I am going to be drawn to that world.
It started by reading books like Uncanny X-Men and X-Force. My favorites were characters like Beast, Archangel and Nightcrawler. I was also reading some of Detective Comics around the time of Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle and even saw the introduction of Tim Drake who is still a favorite to this day.
When I graduated high school , comic books fell by the wayside. I didn’t have a lot of cash and was heading off to school in Charlotte, NC. My stay in Charlotte only lasted a year. It was probably one of the most horrible years of my life.
At the end of the school year I returned back home to Columbus, OH and got a job and the only thing I could really think about was finding a comic book shop and starting to read again. Upon walking into the local comic book retailer, I asked for recommendations. The comic shop owner made a few suggestions. At the top of the list was Astro City which was just starting its ongoing run. JLA featuring Grant Morrison, Howard Porter and John Dell was also just beginning and James Robinson’s ‘Leave it to Chance’.
This would become the renewing of my love for comics. I started to go to various comic book shows around town and started buying back issues by the box, catching up on Aquaman, Green Lantern and The Flash. I fell in love with characters like Kyler Rayner, Wally West, Bart Allen, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, Barbara Gordon and Kon El. Chuck Dixon never ceased to entertain me with his Bat titles and Ed Brubaker would keep me on the edge of my seat with both Catwoman and Captain America.
Wait a second … Captain America?!?! Yep! Captain America!
I know up there at the top I said that I am a DC Comics FanBoy. I even called myself FanBoyPrime for goodness sake but it was only because I couldn’t get the name “DC FanBoy” on twitter and I thought it would be a nice shout out to the whole SuperBoy and SuperBoy Prime thing.
I have no hate for Marvel comics and I don’t buy into that whole “Marvel VS. DC” thing. I enjoy heroes like Thor, Hulk , Captain America and the Fantastic Four. You will even find several runs of their titles in the various long boxes that are in my possession. These are great characters that have an amazing history and have been reinvented and taken on adventures by some wonderfully talented writers and artists.
With all of that said about Marvel Comics, they just don’t appeal to me as much as DC. I am not saying they are bad and I am not saying that DC Comics is better. I am just not saying “ Make Mine Marvel!”.
Let’s throw something else out there. People complain about fanboys from time to time because … well … some fanboys like to complain. Complaining is not why I am taking time to create a blog.
You will probably find that I am going to take the “Glass Half Full” or “Silver Lining” approach. Because of this I have been called an apologist on various message boards. I am ok with that. Personally, I just like to remain positive.
Let’s get something else out of the way … I am doing this as a fan and am not supported or paid by any part of the comic book industry, be it a local comic book shop or comic book publisher. Every Wednesday I look forward to stopping by the shop and picking up my pull. I use my hard earned and buy what I can and I buy responsibly. This means that I do actually budget comic books into my finances along with my rent, car payment, insurance and my San Diego Comic Con fund.
So, if you are still reading … Welcome! Let us talk about some comic books while analyzing Dick Grayson’s love redheads!
